ABSTRACT

In newly industrialising countries (NICs) sustainability innovations are becoming increasingly urgent from a global perspective. NICs have made significant economic progress in the last years, but they are still facing the challenge of having to upgrade their energy infrastructure. An important question is whether they are ready to integrate sustainability technologies into their economic development. Recently there has been a strong increase in the diffusion of clean energy technologies in countries such as China and India (Pew Environment Group 2011). Some NICs have also started to develop a domestic supply industry. This opens up the question of how the respective innovation system is working, and what strategies, e.g. with regard to technology acquisition and policy support, are best suited to such a development.
