ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses two ways in which English Language Teaching(ELT) programmes are making use of new technologies. New technologies and media consist of blends of digital technologies, practices and social arrangements that people use to enable and extend their ability to share meaning, communicate through shared technical resources and build large networked communities. Increasingly integrated into second language programmes, new technologies challenge ELT professionals to reconsider how they design, teach and assess their courses. Nowadays, as contemporary students make frequent use of short message services (SMS) facilities and online social and visual media, handwritten responses in class may seem dated. Gruba and Hinkelman place groupings as a dimension in their framework for blended learning to recognise how classroom activities may vary according to whether or not students are working individually, in pairs or in small or large groups.
