ABSTRACT

Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers. Voltaire

Okay, you have heard all about why you should give your students a weekly Genius Hour and you are sold! You see the amazing potential of such a project and you are ready to dive in. But how do you get students started? In this chapter, we will take you through three steps for introducing Genius Hour: Step 1: Inspire Your Class; Step 2: Brainstorm with Students; Step 2.5 (optional): Model and Scaffold; and Step 3: Create an Inquiry Question. Along the way, we’ll keep in mind what Parker J. Palmer says, “Good teaching cannot be reduced to technique; good teaching comes from the identity and integrity of the teacher” (Parker J. Palmer, The Courage to Teach: Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher’s Life). As educators, you will have to do it your way and make it your own, but these are the tried, tested and true ways that have worked for us and many others.
