ABSTRACT

This paper focuses on the potential to develop more creative approaches to the support of older people and the contribution of social work to this task. It takes as its starting point a commitment to active ageing, as adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO) (2002). This will be analysed in relation to the specific circumstances of older people in England. It is suggested that the intersection between demographic change, austerity and social work with older people is creating pressures that are particular to England (Lymbery, 2012), while they have connections to those seen elsewhere across Europe (Ungerson, 2004).
