ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about the way in which boys showed up within the recognition and reward systems. It also talks about the nature of pedagogical places provided to boys and how boys in turn used them, made sense of them and repurposed them in some cases. At Preston Hall, it seems that boys self organize in ways that are neither articulated in school rules nor policed by school authorities. As boys progress through the grades at Preston Hall, teachers and school authorities bestow much more trust on them. Boys congregate and spend time in the company of particular groups. Being a student in a higher grade—Grade 11 or Grade 12—Nicolas explains, one is expected to act in ways that are deemed responsible by the school authorities. Ethan goes on to explain that a lot of students become tight with a handful of teachers in the school.
