ABSTRACT

The case study presented in this chapter is based on a programme delivered by Brathay Trust to support young women at risk of sexual exploitation. The chapter describes how and why the young women found themselves in this situation and highlights the importance of awareness of the structures that surrounded the young women as the catalyst for change. The inclusion of a residential within the programme exemplifies how this can be used to step 'away' from everyday contexts to gain a different perspective. Typically exploiters target young women who may feel more in need of love and attention, because it may have been missing from their lives in care. The programme also offered the young women opportunity to develop friendships and positive networks. A significant feature within this programme was the use of residential experiences as time 'away' and a catalyst for change.
