ABSTRACT

The case study presented in this chapter is based on a programme designed to reduce re-offending in a rural local authority. It tells the story of one young man who was living a high-risk life, alcoholic, violent, workless and in trouble with the police. A new modernity has seen both increased options and increased complexity in life trajectories. Adam's story exemplifies many of the factors highlighted above. Adam grew up amid chaotic circumstances, including neglect, abuse, alcoholism, drugs and criminal activity. Adam was introduced to the programme through his probation worker. It was voluntary and not part of his order, but he chose to engage. The programme aimed to support 18–25-year-old ex-offenders, or those at risk of offending, towards full-time employment. The approach was holistic and supportive, with a focus on helping participants develop personal, social and employability skills through participation on a course with a nine-month maximum duration.
