ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the situation in English-medium Instruction (EMI) contexts and argues that a pressing need to reflect on and increasingly incorporate language awareness foci in the settings. It provides a comprehensive picture of EMI programmes in the European context, with a special reference to language issues. The chapter examines common drivers for introducing EMI in European higher education institutions and introduces the road-mapping framework as an integrative model to explain the complex and dynamic nature of EMI and EMI research from an applied linguistic perspective. It offers a coherent account of EMI, the chapter focuses on the European context, given that the conceptualization of EMI is most standardized in multilingual setting and that the contextual variables are somewhat shared. It concludes with a call for acknowledging the importance of foregrounding language issues and language awareness in the educational setting.
