ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the classroom environment and the importance of deliberately setting up that environment for success. It focuses on multiple aspects of the classroom environment, from the physical space to the social interactions, routines, and structures that are part of the overall environment. The chapter deals with a discussion about what is included in the classroom and how thoughtful planning for that environment can help teacher’s impact children in powerful ways. The classroom environment sets the stage for learning. The environment of the classroom contributes to a child's understanding of "school" and sets the foundation for current and future success in the academic environment. In the broadest sense, guidance, as described by developmentally appropriate practice, implies the teachers' role as the humane "sage on the side," providing assistance to children as they learn to navigate the social world of school and child care settings.
