ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the basic principles involved in planning strategically as opposed to strategic planning, a subtle but critical shift in perspective. It describes the benefits and strengths of planning that take place at the middle levels of an organization rather than as an instrument of control from the senior management of the organization. The chapter presents the preliminary steps needed to begin planning strategically—building a planning network. A planning network consists of a concentric series of stakeholders that can be consulted in the planning process based on their involvement in online education; their commitment to online education; and their position in the governance and approval process for any specific initiative. Planning strategically has broad applications and can have a powerful impact in shaping the future. It can be applied to goals and objectives of various sizes, scopes, magnitudes and time frames. By planning strategically, planning can become a continuous, ongoing process, rather than a batch, time–bound activity.
