ABSTRACT

Feedback is a critical part of a rigorous classroom. If rigor is about students learning at higher levels, feedback is the staircase that allows the step-by-step growth to happen. In a rigorous classroom, the teacher incorporates motivational elements throughout instruction and assessment. Students are more motivated when they see value in what they are doing and when they feel successful. The most effective feedback helps students see what they have done well, so they can feel successful; then it assists in showing the student what he or she can do to be even more successful. Shifting ownership to students allows them to demonstrate a higher level of understanding, which is a critical part of a rigorous classroom. Because teachers are increasing the rigor of their classroom, they want to be sure to incorporate ample feedback so students can understand where they stand.
