ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the knowledge of the business of being a screenwriter. The finished, polished, well-executed screenplay is the business card the screenwriter needs. The most important thing is to continually produce product for the marketplace. Spec script is a script written on speculation. Most screenwriters start here and most successful screenwriters continue to write spec scripts throughout their careers. Agents, managers and attorneys help the career of a screenwriter. An agent is the writer's representative in the film business. Managers seek out work possibilities and contacts for their clients. A writer's attorney's job is to find a way for his or her client to participate in anything that emerges from the writer's material. It is good to create a network of writers and business associates in the industry. There are screenwriter support groups that meet on a regular basis.
