ABSTRACT

The aims of this chapter are twofold. First, it interrogates the efforts of the Archdiocesan Commission for the Pastoral Care of Migrants & Itinerant People (ACMI) to fill a moral gap in the political landscape by attempting to provide a 'home' to low-skilled migrant workers and second, it discusses women migrant workers' perceptions of and experiences with the efforts of the Church to create a home for them. The Church is cognizant that it is meeting their physical needs; the women may not have easy access to food because of their work and living conditions. The assumption is that migrants identify primarily with their homeland and that they suffer a disruption in their lives as a result of moving from one locale to another. The Befrienders program reaches out to migrants in hospitals and migrants who may be facing problems and unable to leave their homes, and Bread Basket program distributes basic provisions and food in dormitories housing migrant workers.
