ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the theoretical and methodological dilemmas that surround the collection of video-based case study work. It explores the philosophies of visual research, we introduce the importance of using 'video case study' for researching social and solidarity economy (SSE) and reflect on the potentials, constraints and considerations to be taken into account when using the camera as a research tool for collecting and analysing data. The chapter outlines the methodological approach that was taken for this research project and its applicability and discusses the three stages within a 'video case study': pre-production, production and post-production. Case studies combine a variety of data collection methods, including video interviewing, filming surroundings, secondary data, photographs, observations and fieldnotes. The chapter concludes with a reflection on the importance of ethics in visual research and discusses the ways researchers can disseminate knowledge collaboratively with the participants, as well as the bigger impacts that can be made by reaching audiences outside academia.
