ABSTRACT

Limited liability companies have come to dominate most aspects of life in the Global North. They provide almost all our daily needs, from food and water to clothes, housing, transport entertainment and other luxuries. Most people also work for such an organization, depend on it for their income and, later, their pension. A major step in the evolution of companies was to grant such associations of people working together with the protection of limited liability. Under the law, the limited company became a legal ‘person’ with the capacity for making contracts, taking out loans, owning property and much else. Historically, food was a locally produced good where the main governmental concerns were if famine produced food riots or if malnutrition undermined the capacity of the military or reduced the health of army recruits. The environment/society arrow was always significant, of course; climatic disaster, disease or war could seriously diminish food production.
