ABSTRACT

The national memory research in the Czech Republic is undertaken by a number of research institutes, groups and individuals at universities, as well as the Academy of Sciences and other organizations. Various studies, articles and books on this topic have been published in recent times. Research findings show that, among the citizens of the Czech Republic, there are few who are - by their own testimony - interested in history 'very much'. This chapter presents a research project based on the issue of the historical consciousness of inhabitants of the Czech Republic. The main source of information about history is television - mainly historical films and documentaries. The chapter also presents the conception of factors influencing the course of human history. It analyses the evaluation of different periods in Czech history, evaluation of modern Czech history by the public, and opinions about where the Czech Republic belongs in terms of culture.
