ABSTRACT

The basic objectives in the analysis of history textbooks is to determine whether, and to what extent, history textbooks are a resource of cultural memory and how the presentation of some historical events in the material contained therein affects the teaching of historical awareness among students. The subjects of the research are the historical consciousness milestones for the Poles, which determine the essential phases of the cultural memory of the Polish nation and mutual Polish-Russian and Polish-German relations. The chapter analyses the three historical events: 17 January 1945 in Warsaw, the Katyn Massacre of 1940 and the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. The history textbooks selected for analysis are treated here as carriers of cultural memory intended to shape social and historical consciousness about the past of the country. The history textbooks are carriers of cultural memory, which in consecutive years was dependent on the prevailing ideology, the educational policy of the ruling power and the political views of authors.
