ABSTRACT

The conventional formula for achieving prosperity relies on the pursuit of economic growth. Higher incomes will increase wellbeing and lead to prosperity for all, in this familiar view.

But this vision of progress as a paradise of continually rising consumption has come under serious scrutiny – not just from those who doubt its feasibility on a nite planet or question its desirability from a human perspective, but also from those wondering where on earth economic growth is going to come from in the wake of the worst nancial crisis in almost a century.
