ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the management of groups from the perspectives of human behavior, communication, and behavioral change that is based on two significant theories: behavioristic theory and thecognitive behavioral change process. Both theories provide a strong foundation for better understanding the significance of human behavior, how it can be changed relative to facilitated outdoor adventure experiences, and how theory-based programming can aid in the successful fulfillment of program goals. Behavior is communication. Managing groups in an outdoor adventure context requires a leader who is attentive to the behavior of the individuals of the group and understands how to best interpret the underlying meaning of that behaviour. The goals of outdoor adventure programs may be represented along a continuum, which can range from recreational, enrichment, educational, to adjunctive and primary therapy. An outdoor leader's understanding of participant's behavior, and the facilitation of that behavior, can better lead to the achievement of program goals.
