ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some commonly served populations and how the typical Outdoor Adventure Education (OAE) instructional staff member can adjust their facilitation and instructional techniques accordingly, to best deliver the mission of their organization to these populations. Populations that experiential programmers work with are diverse and unique. These populations can range in age, gender, ethnicity, and have a variety of needs. Working with adolescents can be particularly rewarding and frustrating at the same time because of the stage of life these students are experiencing. A special consideration with intact groups is the facilitator's advantage of using booster sessions or other techniques to increase the long-lasting effects of their OAE experience. This is facilitator's chance to make a difference in their life, show them compassion, and teach them the valuable insights the natural environment and OAE/behavioral and group management (BGM) can offer them.
