ABSTRACT

In the wake of the recent professionalization of ghost sign conservation1 in Belgium (see Chapter 18 by Veerle De Houwer; for example, Collet et al. 2010), a Masters project was undertaken at the Department of Conservation-Restoration at the University of Antwerp, in which three ghost signs (two in Belgium and one in Cuba) were investigated in detail. One of the Belgian cases-the Gevaert sign,2 as we will call it-will be the topic of this paper. The sign is dated 1946, is located in the Flemish town of Edegem and promoted the roll film products of the former N.V. Gevaert Photo-producten, today Agfa-Gevaert N.V.
