ABSTRACT

Painted advertising signs were once prolific, covering the walls of cities and towns. These old signs remain as a faded and, for some time, largely forgotten part of the urban fabric. Wherever they are located, they provide a snapshot of the past-an insight into the commerce, society, and politics of the day. Notwithstanding this-whether old advertising signs, building signs, or public murals-often remains the last element of a building to be considered for conservation by heritage authorities and practitioners.
