ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the most important aspect of preparing for college the expectation that it will happen. It begins with an exploration of who is "college material" and the myth of the perfect college student. Expectations are based upon two things knowledge and experience. Expectations are the foundation upon which all future educational attainment rests. Teacher expectations not only influence the expectations of students and their families, they also impact the resources and opportunities that ultimately determine a student's academic path. An important first step in changing the expectations for students with disabilities is to first expand one's own knowledge and experience. The overall focuses of education in the United States centers upon preparing students to be college- and career-ready. The Family situations may impact the level of priority placed on college. Tools to support conversations about college priorities are provided, as well as disability-specific online resources.
