ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 begins by discussing the major characteristics of selected sustainable transport modes at a general level. The discussion lays the background for the latter half of the chapter, which deals with the specific sustainable transport strategies for different city clusters. Based on the overview of unsustainable transport challenges of each city cluster (Chapter 6), a sustainable transport strategy, consisting of two spearheading sustainable transport modes, is then proposed. Nonetheless, they are still relatively crude and are called initial sustainable transport strategies, suggesting that more in-depth analysis must be conducted before implementation. None of the transport options is a ‘turnkey’ solution. This chapter aims to shortlist and propose initial strategies of sustainable transport which are broadly in line with the local situations and capacities of different city clusters. The daunting task of achieving sustainable transport cannot be achieved without insights from the local institutions and people. These specific local factors within a city will be considered in the next chapter.
