ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the following questions: What risk factors are there for the worsening of the position of a group of people? How the prevention method in social work starts? Which techniques are used in the prevention method? and What is known about the evidence of the prevention method? It details the history of the prevention method and the techniques a social worker may utilize to prevent further deterioration of the quality of life of a group of people. The prevention method focuses on preventing structural problems or deterioration of an identified risk situation by setting up educational programmes and projects. Social work originally emerged as a distinct profession through primary prevention efforts in the settlement house movement. Health care and prevention have long been closely linked in fighting infectious diseases to reduce child mortality and increase life expectancy.
