ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the role of social work in a diverse range of losses which may occur over the course of one's life. Social workers often interact with people who are trying to come to terms with a loss. It is evident that social work has played an important role in grief support from its very beginnings back in 1898. The chapter also provides with the intent of seeing social workers embrace their role in providing grief support as a more integral part of their professional practice. Social work to people with AIDS requires a careful approach, a constructive attitude and expert knowledge. Divorce-related social work tasks can involve supporting both partners during this relationship crisis. Far-reaching changes at work may impact on people in a lot of different ways. Aside from financial consequences, there may be consequences in terms of accommodation, family life, leisure time activities and social status.
