ABSTRACT

Addictive processes seem to evolve in our lives and then take on a life of their own. They operate until we come to a point that we get so sick and tired that we decide to do something about them. This chapter seeks to provide a better understanding about how one's addictive processes came into being. In fact, addictive patterns evolve from our family of origin. The emergence of addictive sexuality has its origins in childhood and in matters that were beyond our control. Sexual behaviour is part of an in-built drive. It is not like the learned use of alcohol or recreational drugs. The body chemistry is within you and not outside of you. Some of us learn to escape negative feeling states by the use of alcohol, while some of us learn to use behaviours which generate their own rewards as a way of escaping negative feeling states.
