ABSTRACT

Economists believe that economic development is central to “development”. Economic growth (income growth) and poverty reduction show a clear positive correlation, which can be statistically verified. 2 Here, poverty is measured by income and consumption standard per capita. In this sense, economists might appear arrogant. Yet, when asked if income growth is the objective of development, they are humble in answering that it is no more than a means to achieve development goals. Economists believe that setting the objectives of development is outside the purview of economics. The majority of development economists acknowledge the significance of considering politics (institutions), social development, and human development. At the same time, they feel frustrated with social and human development experts who renounce economic development just for the sake of their self-identification.
