In pairs or small groups: The social context of fear and anxiety around birth. In the Northern Ireland study the researcher's midwives need to be more proactive in offering credible alternatives to medical interventions. It is not simple before we can begin to offer such alternatives, we have to consider how cultural norms around fear of birth impact on all of us in our efforts to embrace physiological birth. Researchers cannot consider the social context of birth without looking at the messages about birth portrayed in the media, particularly in reality TV shows. The authors cite the work of in highlighting the negative effect of reality TV shows and conclude that age-appropriate education in primary and secondary schools should be provided as an alternative to mass-mediated information about birth.
