ABSTRACT

This is the fifth chapter in Part I ‘Learning to teach: theory, methods and contexts’. The chapter describes school responses to ongoing policy pressures specifically when schools are seen as a key space for educating teachers. As the movement towards school-based teacher preparation gains more currency, this chapter discusses the way in which schools are managing to support future teachers in both countries. The chapter provides a useful introduction to those chapters in Part II, which are essentially based on a series of vignettes created from observations and interviews with student teachers during their induction year.
