ABSTRACT

The Internet provides a vast array of opportunities for a wide range of sexual experiences. People can find information about sexual health, sexual techniques, behaviors, and educational resources. This chapter outlines how attachment insecurity or ruptures caused by cybersex and pornography problems can be resolved through emotionally focused therapy for couples. The disclosure or nondisclosure of sexual activities can be a significant factor affecting the severity of an attachment rupture. Partners are often more hurt when they discover behavior that has been hidden from them, undermining trust. Attachment theory posits that most problematic behavior is the result of past or present threats to secure attachment. Emotionally focused therapy roots in attachment theory becomes especially salient for couples dealing with secretive cybersex and pornography issues, as such behaviors are highly correlated with early attachment failure and typically create a threat to secure attachment.
