ABSTRACT

This chapter provides some initial ideas that can help practitioners on their journey of helping families improve their relationships. The largest and most thorough research literature that links family of origin experiences to adult relationships is the literature on attachment. It has been suggested that development of attachment patterns as infant or child transcend into romantic adult relationships. In addition to the sequence in which attachment needs are sought after, attachment orientation also seems to originate at a young age. Attachment orientations may play a crucial role in the types of romantic and sexual relationships experienced later on in life. The forming and bonding experience is not determined by one partner but must be fostered by both partners to solidify secure attachment. Although past attachment bonds can undoubtedly influence future relationships, it would be unjust to say that they are permanent.
