ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the conceptualization of hurt and behaviors that evoke hurt feelings or social pain and responses to hurt. It discusses factors that influence the duration, intensity, and impact of hurt feelings. Research and theory on self-esteem provide clear support for an association between individuals' perceptions of themselves and the way they make sense of emotion-relevant stimuli such as hurtful behaviors. The link between self-construals and hurt feelings has also been examined in terms of the mental models that people have of themselves in relation to others. Researchers and theorists often presume that when people are frequently hurt by a partner they will become less satisfied with their relationship over time. The association between relational quality and people's responses to hurt feelings also has been examined in terms of commitment. Individuals' commitment to their relationship involves interdependence with their partner and vulnerability to their partner's behavior.
