ABSTRACT

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in one form or another have existed for thousands of years in humans, and it is highly likely that they have been adding to relationship difficulties for a good portion of that time. STIs can be transmitted during the course of a sexual relationship or can even be acquired while on a "break" from a partner. The chapter presents the cases of Jonathon Siegel and Dino Bongiletti and Janie Reynolds and Mark Snyder to illustrate some of the issues for relationships in which STIs may be a potential or real issue to be confronted. Working with couples is complex enough, but when an STI is involved the complexity necessarily increases. It is important that the couple has up-to-date, accurate, authoritative information about the STIs they have and that appropriate medical treatment is offered. Couples' therapy is uniquely placed to deal with these complex issues and can mean the difference between a relationship foundering or being salvageable.
