ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights important considerations when working with couples experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV). Particular attention will be given to issues of IPV risk factors, typologies, assessment, treatment considerations, and interventions/techniques. Risk factors for IPV are numerous and are represented on every ecological level. Traditional theories used to explain IPV as a symptom of larger sociocultural factors. Mindfulness is the process of turning one's awareness to the present moment with an attitude of openness and compassion. Developing a practice of mindfulness meditation will aid each partner in becoming aware of his/her experience of violence and recognizing escalation signals and eventually help with self-soothing. Teaching communication strategies will aid couples with constructive conversations about difficult and potentially violence-triggering topics. Continued screening and assessment for appropriateness of conjoint therapy, reiterating de-escalation strategies, and addressing communication skills can lead to all help maintain a violence-free relationship.
