ABSTRACT

Families come in all shapes and sizes, from one adult and one related child through any combination of adults and children, linked by birth, adoption, fostering or step family, living under the same roof or in different homes. However, families living apart can have especial challenges when it comes to managing digital use, and new technology can offer both particular benefits, and notable downsides. One of the biggest challenges for parents after a break-up is how you work together for the good of your children. Children and young people often desperately wish to keep contact with both parents, although there can be real issues with divided loyalties. Digital technology can also be fundamental in keeping hold of memories important to a child when a family changes. Social media can allow separated families to operate as one. Digital technology can revolutionise contact arrangements.
