ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a strategy whereby non-pluralist economics departments are left to their own devices and an alternative base for a pluralist economics is established elsewhere in the university. This strategy has a modest form whereby one or more pluralist subjects or majors are established in other departments. The chapter considers modest form of institutional separation. Institutional separation in the form of separate departments of political economy is a reform strategy that has demonstrated both real gains but also presents real dangers. The chapter explores two detailed case studies that focus on the ambitious form of the strategy. The first case study is of the Department of Political Economy at the University of Sydney in Australia. Political economy at the University of Sydney presents itself as a model that many reformers might do well to consider actively as an option appropriate for their particular university. The second case study is of the University of Notre Dame in the United States.
