ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how development professionals can integrate an anthropological approach into their day-to-day development practice. Development work is the intentional pursuit of change; thus, the design of initiatives to achieve change is a central feature of all development work. The chapter introduces the reader to a set of practical tools that can be used to apply the elements of the framework in their work, at each stage of a typical project or program cycle: from assessment and design through to implementation and evaluation. In practice, there are many ways to conduct an assessment, and many tools are available to assist the ongoing process. An anthropological approach to assessment is possible, even within the constraints of desktop work. Numerous tools are available from the community development and participatory development traditions that can be used to bring different actors together to design and co-design initiatives.
