ABSTRACT

This chapter considers traditional epistemic questions of trust, testimony, and extended knowledge as they arise in our use of search engines. While “google knowing” has many similarities with “analogue” kinds of testimonial knowledge, we argue that there are epistemically relevant differences in the character of Internet testifiers, and in our abilities to assess them. We raise the idea that google knowing might change the nature of knowing itself because of changes to the processes of gaining and processing information online.
