ABSTRACT
Over the past twenty years, the Internet has become an increasingly important source of information for almost everyone. However, many people online intentionally try to mislead us. In this chapter, I show how work by René Descartes and David Hume in (what I will call) “adversarial epistemology” points the way to one possible solution to this epistemic threat. By combining their insights with work in modern cryptography, I argue that it is possible for us to assure ourselves that we are dealing with a trustworthy source and, thus, to acquire knowledge from the Internet.
