ABSTRACT
This chapter examines efforts of the international community to bring about peace through bilateral and multilateral treaties and the activities of international organizations as the League of Nations and the United Nations. It also examines the role of the nonstate actors in this process. The chapter explores the macro- and micro-level attempts by nations, organizations, and individuals to bring peace to the world. It discusses the macro-level perspectives on peace and the notion that much of the world's history has been a story of "postconflict," which can be the result of certain combatants "winning" a war or through persistent, organized, and collective third-party interventions. The chapter shows that the various ways nations and states have encouraged and participated in creating peace through various processes of diplomacy, peace operations, and reconciliation movements. It concludes with the discussion of the prospects for the global civil society and the world without wars.
