ABSTRACT

In chapter six, we play with notions of stigma as applied to sex offenders and we shed light on how correctional staff interpret persons convicted, charged, or suspected of engaging in non-consensual sexual acts. In returning to the theoretical orientation of stigma, we use this chapter employ framing theory to draw additional insight into how sex offenders are defined and understood by those with whom they interact. Empirically, we examine correctional staff interactions with and experiences of sex offenders in their custody.
