ABSTRACT

This introductory chapter outlines the broader political and social context in which the Second Edition is being published, and the main aims of the volume. It identifies some of the new issues which have come to characterise the field of Terrorism Studies, such as questions over the impact of critical terrorism studies (CTS), returned foreign fighters, mass surveillance, cyberterrorism and counter-radicalisation. It also notes the continuing salience of key controversies and questions around the definition of terrorism, the threat of terrorism, the causes of terrorism and the response to terrorism. Finally, it outlines the structure and form of the volume, and provides an overview of the chapters.
