ABSTRACT

School films have been presenting images of erotic tension so consistently and for so long that it is difficult to stop looking for love in school films. Yet this pedagogical relationship would not have the added element of scandal if it were not for the fact that celebrated teachers in history and fiction are often recognized for their revolutionary pedagogy: as illustrated by the analysis, great teaching takes place beyond the law. Like the image of failed teaching offered in the character of Fatty Hodge, Sheba has come to teaching seeking fulfillment: she seeks recognition as the "wonderful teacher" Covett promises her she will be, and is now poised to fulfill her desires by consoling herself with the gems. During the one art lesson the film depicts, it is the student who explains da Vinci to the teacher. In fulfilling this fantasy, however, it reveals the horror of the fantasy made real.
