ABSTRACT

In broadcast and related applications, acoustics relate to the sources, paths and receivers of audible vibrations in air, and physically perceptible vibrations in structures, that affect enclosed rooms and exterior spaces used for creation, production, recording, listening and viewing of audio and video material. This chapter focuses on basic guidelines of acoustics for facility planning, design and construction in both new construction and renovation. Successful projects require collaboration between experienced studio designers, architects, engineers and consultants from the start. The chapter includes a list of additional references for those interested in learning more about first principles of acoustics and related fields. Audio and video production spaces include linear and nonlinear edit rooms and mix rooms. Spaces used for audio production have a greater need for quiet and controlled acoustic environments, but a high-quality sound reproduction and a controlled listening environment is required to ensure excellence in the finished product.
