ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the implementation of equipment and systems for producing compressed digital television bit streams in accordance with the original Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) Digital Television standard. It also covers the video encoder, the transport multiplexer, system solutions, and video coding technology of ATSC. The chapter discusses the issues related to the implementation of Program and System Information Protocol (PSIP), followed by the use of Programming Metadata Communication Protocol and the role of the various sources of PSIP metadata. It discusses the principles of operation of the equipment that broadcasters need to use for the vital part of their operations. The most accurate results are achieved by using a full-function "look-ahead" or multi-pass encoder before the actual encoding of the video signal. The chapter concludes by the PSIP requirements stated in the Federal Communications Commission rules.
