ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews many of the technological, social, and cultural indicators to suggest that the surf park industry is on the verge of major development acceleration. It explores sustainability issues related to the construction of wholly artificial surfing spaces as the industry progresses by applying Nirvanification theory. The symbolic elements of Nirvanic surf park space were considered by surf park developers to be: perfect waves, guaranteed wave count, cushioned adventure, authenticity from a social/cultural perspective, the setting, and accessibility. Surf parks that can generate high-quality waves will have the Holy Grail effect – a reliably perfect wave with a wave count guarantee and the ability to manage the resource in a way that makes the most economic sense. Land, power, and water usage issues can be incorporated into surf park narratives to find real, creative solutions and educate guests about the issues. The chapter explains what form will threats, myths, and resistance take in the context of artificial surfing spaces.
