ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on the correspondence of architectural thinking and making through the dialectics/dichotomies, or, put differently, through the complicated/ambiguous mediation and media of the architectural discipline. The representation of contemporary architecture is too varied and too numerous to exact any precise categorization. Specific genres of architectural medium, to be considered in various combination. Varyingly professional and pedagogical/academic in their examinations of and preoccupations with drawing as medium, the architects interviewed include: Johnston Marklee, LTL, DVVT (Architecten de Vylder Vinck Taillieu), and Wes Jones. Appearing varyingly convergent and divergent in both production and result, these case studies demonstrate a diversity in approach, in hierarchy of concerns, and in methodology. In their intentionally broad scope, it is people's hope that these studies offer a multiplicity of occasions for thinking and rethinking the contemporary relation of matter and medium/representation.
