ABSTRACT

Meredith interviewed Nader Tehrani and Stan Allen. Representation was a substitute for a lack of quality in building. Architects in the 1970s were not resisting building but many of them did not have the opportunity to build. The orthographic projections of plans, elevations, and sections have not lost significance in our work and we hope it never will. There is a lack of attention to what a section can do. It really is just a result. It is a very different sensibility. Virtual reality is now almost becoming ubiquitous and maybe more interestingly the hybridized virtual reality, which takes our real environments, but then synthetically, puts artificial things into them. The architect sites the building from their knowledge and expertise in positioning the building according to the sun, wind, views, and the elements; and not from their abilities in merely maximizing square footage or interpreting zoning guidelines. Advancements in new tools no doubt enable architects to expedite their tasks.
