ABSTRACT

The army of Portugal consisted of eight infantry divisions and two small cavalry divisions. One of the infantry divisions was commanded by a general-of-brigade, Thomières, the other seven by generals-of-division. Each division consisted of two brigades, so there were twenty in all. The names of thirteen of the generals-of-brigade are known. It seems likely that the other seven were commanded by the senior colonels. There were theoretically two regiments in each infantry brigade, but the number of battalions and squadrons varied. The two cavalry divisions were both commanded by generals-of-brigade as was one of the cavalry brigades.
